By Rich Bowden:
Queensland’s Crime and Misconduct Commission report into the investigation following the 2004 death in custody of Palm Island’s Cameron Doomadgee (Mulrunji), will criticise the conduct of senior police involved in the investigation, newspaper reports have revealed.
Brisbane’s Courier Mail alleges the report — to be released within the month — will name at least nine investigating officers and recommend that seven face misconduct charges relating to the investigation following Mr Doomadgee’s death of massive internal injuries, which occurred less than an hour following his arrest.
The Courier mail’s report quotes the Commission as saying the wider community had been “let down” by the failure of investigating officers to act in an impartial manner in an investigation which led to the trial and eventual acquittal of Sen-Sgt Chris Hurley in 2007.
Sgt Hurley admitted a scuffle had occurred between he and the deceased at the time of Mr Doomadgee’s incarceration in a Palm Island watch house.
The ABC is reporting a CMC spokesperson has refused to confirm if the Commission had found evidence of police protecting other members of the force. It said the CMC will “…release its report into Cameron Doomadgee’s death after Deputy Chief Magistrate Brian Hine hands down his findings of a third coronial inquiry next Friday.”
The Queensland Police Service has said it would not comment until the report is made official.
