Dollsquad / Intercontinental Playboys / Platinum Brunette – Sandringham Hotel Newtown 03/2010
From the second Dollsquad hit the Sando stage it was obvious they meant deadly serious business , decked from head to toe in high heeled leather hell , lead singer Joey swinging a massive chain, the band screamed danger just as much as any Russ Meyer female lead character.
Putting on a real show is something that is sadly lacking in today’s pub rock scene, Dollsquad pouted and posed through the entire 60 + minute set, KOTJMF.
The sound is a hybrid of 70s punk, snotty garage and glam which others have attempted in the past but DS chucked a good enough dose of bad fun to make it work.
Most of their new album Lethal in Leather got played plus covers of Hot Generation (originally recorded by Aussie garage surf punkers The Sunsets), Bad News Travels Fast (Fuzztones) and Peanut Duck ( a great 60s soul track so obscure that nobody is entirely sure of the performers name), sadly nothing from the early line up album got played.
Live the tracks from the new album sound great, probably even better than the studio recordings.
Openers, The Intercontinental Playboys played one of their toughest sounding sets in yonks, the big boomy new Sando room and PA gave them a tough tough edge, also glad to see the uniforms have been ditched.
Platinum Brunette were perhaps an odd choice for the support, 3 ugly dudes dressed up as even uglier chicks, they rocked hard in a punk Motley Crue / Donnas metal style, the punters dug them.
