It’s an energetic atmosphere at Melbourne Town Hall this fine-ish evening (31/03/10) as comedians and acts spruik their respective shows, as they do every night for their respective seasons. On this night the spruiking was momentarily stopped by the good folk pushing a tram to get it moving again but that’s Melbourne.
However back to the purpose of this post, to review Damian Callinan’s show at the “Melbourne International Comedy Festival” (MICF).
Callinan’s show “The Merger: Sportsman’s Night 2″ is, according to the MICF synopsis:
“…a sequel to his multi-award winning ‘Sportsman’s Night’ Damian reintroduces us to the Bodgy Creek Football Club. The town and team are rooted. Time to recruit from Christmas Island! That’s the Bodgy Creek Solution.”
And that’s exactly what it is. He brings out familiar characters and creates a great show with a certainly familiarity that makes the jokes funnier. And if you’re from a country town he provides an authentic and fun rip-off of life in a small community. For me, sitting up close, it was a personal experience as Callinan interacts with the audience very well. While I enjoy this aspect at shows, I also know there are some that don’t really appreciate such interaction. However, Callinan manages to achieve this well in a spirited yet friendly way.
It was a simple and surprisingly dramatic show that includes some puppetry. It is a cleverly interwoven show with an equally clever way of taking you on a ride through Bogey Creek Football Club’s latest journey.
If you’re looking for something to see at MICF I would recommend you get along to Damian Callinan’s “The Merger: Sportsman’s Night 2″.
My rating? 8 out of 10.
